The success and profitability of any dental clinic is utterly dependent upon the effective and professional contribution of every member of the team.

Nowhere in business is there greater need for a coherent, consistent and coordinated approach. Everyone must be pulling in the same direction, giving their all. Anything less will have a detrimental effect upon the profitability of the clinic.

Collectively the clinic sets its goals, then individually these goals need to be administered and monitored. But how do you set up achievable goals? And how do you implement them? The leader is ultimately responsible but the clinic should come together and set out what is achievable together.

Objectives must be set for each individual. These individual objectives will make it possible for the team to achieve its objectives. When the team achieves its objectives, the clinic by default achieves its objectives. And the leader of the clinic adjudicates over the achievement of both individual and collective goals.

Objectives should never be vague. “Do your best” or “Work hard” are not objectives. Objectives must be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timed.

Objectives are just one area of personal and team development. Effective communication is crucial. Everyone must know what is expected of them in the short, medium and long terms.

Observation is also crucial: recognising people’s weaknesses and addressing them; identifying people’s strengths and harnessing them.
